Art Room presents Interchanging Lines, Constructing Home, which features a compelling group of artworks in a variety of media that challenge the idea of the nuclear home, explore their separation from family created by political discourse, and present their new (re)construction or vision of home. The virtual show runs from July 1 through August 31, 2020.
Interchanging Lines, Constructing Home was juried and curated by MFA students in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas enrolled in the spring 2020 Graduate Professional Practice course taught by O. Gustavo Plascencia. Jurors came from many different backgrounds and work in a wide range of media. Located in Denton, TX, UNT offers a cross-disciplinary Master of Fine Art Program with nationally exhibiting artists. Art Room is pleased to continue to collaborate with MFA graduate students Shellye Tow, Jacob Philips, and Ben Statser for the duration of the exhibition.
In regard to jurors’ selections for the exhibition, “Today’s world demands diversity. It is with great privilege that Interchanging Lines, Constructing Home has its exhibition opening during the closing of Pride Month. We hope to offer individuals the comfort that they are not alone and to equip families with alternatives and new perspectives on the nuclear family. We wanted to create an exhibition that embodies the challenges, uncertainty, and discomfort frequently created by the current social climate where many individuals are left to live in divided homes due to their sexual orientation and gender identities conflicting with their existing family structures. Often, the collision of sexual orientation and gender identities with the idea of a nuclear home creates unwanted tension in the family environment.
“We selected and invited artists that challenge the idea of the nuclear home, explore their separation from family created by sociopolitical discourse, or present their new (re)construction of or vision for the concept of home. In the selection process, we found it important to have a diverse group of voices and mediums. We aim to create conversation centered around the changing climate the domestic setting.”
Art Room will host a virtual opening reception for Interchanging Lines, Constructing Home on July 16, 2020.
