The artists featured in EIGHT transform their blank canvases – whether that be linen, paper, yupo, or the landscape – into rhythmic, gestural works that express a curiosity of self, time, and place. Through a narrative exploration of the personification of inanimate objects, Charis Ammon’s paintings consider the way in which borders and portals affect proprietorship. Her window blinds, fences, and walls bring about questions regarding one’s relationship with the “inside and outside world.” Lauren Hana Chai creates work using unconventional methodologies that include mixed media and oil on a variety of matrixes that reference her multicultural Eastern / Western upbringing. Her work reflects her own identity, as well as addresses taboo, feminism, sexuality, violation, and oppression. While using time and language as artistic materials, Alicia Eggert investigates the notion of absence and presence through an exploration of cycles, time, and weather. Her work questions the way one understands the past, present, and future in combination with the way one relates her or himself to time and experience.
