PRESS RELEASE
Art Room presents its inaugural juried exhibition Now | Contemporary 2019, which features a compelling group of artworks in a variety of media. The exhibition showcases work by Marcelo Guidoli, Ethan Heberer, Chris Ireland, Alexandra Opie, Project Barbatype by Scott Hilton and Bryan Wing, Ginger Sisco-Cook, TUG Collective, and Bernardo Vallarino.
Now | Contemporary 2019 was juried by Claudia Zapata, a doctoral candidate in Southern Methodist University’s RASC/a: Rhetorics of Art, Space and Culture: Ph.D. Program in Art History. Claudia is currently the Latino art curatorial assistant at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in support of the exhibition ¡Printing the Revolution! Chicano Graphics from the Civil Rights Era to the Present. In regard to her selections for the exhibition, Zapata writes, “Now | Contemporary 2019 features select artists from a national call. This featured group of multimedia artworks showcases explorations and reimaginations of identity, place, and memory. From tintypes to digital prints and drawings, the artists’ select mediums reflect the varied experimentations of compositional space, queer portraiture, and materiality. These multimedia explorations cover themes of political strife and the controversial spaces that artists navigate. This exhibition is a compendium of the national, artistic practice that manifests itself in many forms, unrestrained by the confines of a specific theme or medium.”
