ABOUT THE CLASS
Wednesdays | February 12 – March 11, 2020
6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Beginner to Intermediate
Is a pencil your trusty friend, or do you think about drawing and you’re not sure how to begin? Or, maybe you feel you know how to draw, but want to try new drawing mediums and techniques? Whether you’re new to the drawing scene, or feel you know your way around with a pencil, this class is a fun way to consider the approaches to drawing.
Over the course of five weeks, students will learn about and be introduced to the fundamentals of drawing. Learning the differences between contour and gesture lines, as well as the idea of mark-making, the class will discover the essential functions of the line and its relation to drawing both abstract and figurative/naturalistic.
During the class, students will learn and experiment with creating the line using various drawing mediums ranging from dry to wet—charcoal and pencil to pen and ink. Through a series of direct observation exercises of pre-composed still lives, students will be introduced to or refreshed on the individual components of what creates a drawing. Breaking down the class into four parts: gesture, contour, shading, and freestyling, students will have room to learn and experiment with what creates a fully formed drawing.
As a final project, students will compose their own still lives and create a drawing incorporating the techniques worked through in earlier classes. Students will leave the class with the materials and knowledge to continue drawing on their own, as well as better understanding their own drawing style and favorite approach.
