Balades Parisiennes

Art Room presents Balades Parisiennes a solo exhibition by Parisian artist Jessica Pliez that invites the viewer into the artist’s imagination through fantastical imagery. The show runs March 5 – 23, 2019.

Jessica Pliez is a multi-media artist that utilizes her curiosity and sense of exploration to create imagery of whimsical creatures and fabricated self-portraits. She draws inspiration from her French upbringing, which Pliez describes in her autobiographical text Balades Parisiennes (Parisian Strolls). Both introspective and experiential, Pliez’s work turns the viewer’s perception upside down as she uses photography, drawing, painting, and printmaking to depict colorful, layered pieces of artistic fiction.

Balades Parisiennes was curated by Sean FitzGibbons, director of the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. The exhibition was first shown at Dock Space Gallery Annex in San Antonio, TX in December 2018. In regard to his fascination with Pliez’s artwork, FitzGibbons says, ““I was intrigued by Jessica Pliez’s characters and narratives when I saw her solo gallery show last August. Then, I began to see her artwork pop-up around the streets of Paris, which is the best way to experience these otherworldly creatures. Balades Parisiennes examines more of the narrative that Pliez created, well beyond her street art. This show features the woodblock prints that exist on the Parisian streets, but it continues that universe into other media, such as Polaroid portraiture and drawings, created on the face of train tickets.””

Art Room is open to the public and will host a reception for Balades Parisiennes on March 21, 2019.
