FIVE: Ties That Bind

FIVE: Ties That Bind

OCTOBER 14, 2016

Art Room is pleased to announce its first solo show FIVE: Ties That Bind, representing the work of local artist, Deedra Baker. FIVE: Ties That Bind explores the nexus of Deedra’s family through three generations of females. Through portraits, environmental still lifes, and landscapes, this series examines the interconnectedness between her mother, three sisters, two nieces, and herself. As an extension of the traditional family archive of snapshots, the work consists of color photographs and high-definition video.

Deedra Baker is a photographer and book artist currently based in Denton, TX. Her work and research focus on themes of adolescence, femininity, identity, and sexuality. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011, from Washburn University in Topeka, KS, where she was the recipient of numerous honors, such as the Charles and Margaret Pollak Award and Sibberson Award. Deedra recently graduated with her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts with a Photography Concentration and Intermedia Secondary Concentration at Texas Woman's University in 2016. Selections from her body of work have been featured nationally in exhibitions and publications including, Chowan University National Juried Exhibition, Light Leaked, PhotoSpiva National Photographic Competition and Exhibition, and Voyeur: Repositioning the Gaze.
